Advocacy In Action: 2025 Government Relations Report
In March, the American Advertising Federation of Des Moines continued its long-standing tradition of advocacy with a powerful presence both nationally and locally. With the generous support of Freeman Company, our chapter proudly participated in the American Advertising Federation’s National “Advertising Day on the Hill” in Washington, D.C.
Representing AAF Des Moines, Tom Woody—now in his eighth year as our Government Relations Director—joined nearly 70 fellow AAF members from across the country in the nation’s capital. The two-day event included briefings from leading industry experts and policymakers, giving attendees valuable insights into legislative priorities and regulatory trends affecting advertising and marketing.
While in Washington, Tom had the honor of attending a constituent coffee meeting with Senator Joni Ernst, where he engaged directly with the Senator and her staff. He also met with policy staff from Senator Chuck Grassley’s office and Representative Zach Nunn’s team. In each of these meetings, Tom emphasized three key legislative priorities for the advertising industry:
- Protecting the 100% Deductibility of Advertising – Advertising is a cornerstone of American commerce and should remain a fully deductible business expense. Reducing or eliminating this deduction would stifle innovation, disproportionately impact small businesses, and dampen economic activity.
- Establishing a National Privacy Framework – With a growing patchwork of state-level privacy laws, businesses—especially those with operations in multiple states—face increased compliance burdens and consumer confusion. A national standard would provide clarity and consistency, while preserving the ability to reach and serve customers responsibly.
- Highlighting Advertising’s Economic and Employment Impact – Advertising supports thousands of jobs and contributes billions to the economy, both nationally and right here in Iowa. From creative agencies and media companies to production crews and freelancers, the industry plays a vital role in our state’s economic engine and helps local businesses grow.
Just a few weeks later, our focus turned to state advocacy at home. Tom, along with AAF Des Moines President Chantelle Chadek and Vice President Nathan White, hosted our annual Ad Day at the Capitol in Des Moines—a key grassroots effort now in its 17th year.
Held inside the Iowa State Capitol, this legislative reception brought together senators, representatives, aides, and staffers for open dialogue on the vital role the advertising industry plays in Iowa’s economy and cultural life. Conversations were fueled by coffee and muffins generously provided by local favorite Smokey Row, a small gesture that speaks to our commitment to supporting fellow Iowa businesses.
Founded more than 115 years ago, the American Advertising Federation of Des Moines remains deeply committed to advocacy, education, and leadership in our industry. Participation in both state and national government relations events reflects one of our most important responsibilities: ensuring that the voice of advertising is heard, understood, and respected by policymakers at all levels.
As we look ahead, we remain dedicated to our mission and grateful for the support of partners like Freeman, whose sponsorship makes our presence and impact possible.
