  • Contributions to the Community – The recipient should be someone who has been active in civic, religious, or other groups dedicated to human or social welfare.

Louie Laurent, ZLRIgnition

Just like his agency’s process for building and sustaining bold brands, Louie Laurent puts a lot of heart and soul into the work he does for clients. As agency president and founding partner, Louie is responsible for the strategic direction of the company, new business growth and nurturing and supporting his talented staff. In addition to his executive duties, he has guided communication strategies for leading brands like UnityPoint Health, Iowa State University, Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa Economic Development Authority, among many others.  He has developed a unique expertise in re-branding, brand planning and organizational change as it relates to brand.

A graduate of Drake University, Louie is a frequent lecturer and is a member of the Drake University Journalism National Advisory Council. During the week, you’ll find him strumming his guitar in-between meetings, reviewing creative concepts or writing. During his downtime, Louie enjoys golfing, wine and Drake basketball.

Al Tramontina, Integer Group

Al Tramontina arrived at Kragie/Newell as an account coordinator 24 years ago with a degree from the University of Iowa, a persistent Hawkeye fever and ad sales experience. A native of Sioux City with a rare, but always interesting Irish-Italian heritage, he quickly entrenched himself in the Kragie/Newell growth plan. Al has served in roles spanning from account direction to operations, from new business to executive management and helped guide Kragie/Newell from private ownership to a publicly held company known today as The Integer Group, a member of TBWA\Worldwide, an Omnicom Group company where he currently serves as Executive Vice President. Over the years, he and his teams have been successful in building national and global client relationships that have included McDonald’s, Chevrolet, NAPA, Pella, Shell, Michelin, BFGoodrich Electrolux and Frigidaire; and local and regional clients such as Iowa Lottery Authority, Iowa Economic Development Authority, Veridian Credit Union and Mercy Medical Center. From burgers to tires and washers to carpet, he has been part of making his teams, company and clients achieve success.

All along the way, Al has made time for non-profit and community investment and mentored some of the best and brightest young men and women in the industry. The two young men of whom he’s most proud are sons Spencer and Max, although he gives his wife Jody most of the credit.

Ad Pro of the Year

Ad Pro of the Year is awarded to a current member who has been an active and vital part of the club for two years or more.

Brett Burkhart, Slash Web Studios

Brett Burkhart joined AAF of Des Moines in 2011 by jumping neck deep into the ambassador role to welcome new members and reach out to existing members to keep them connected to the club. During his term as ambassador, Brett volunteered his experience as a web designer and developer to build the new AAF of Des Moines website. In 2012, Brett served as the Communications Director and worked to strengthen communication of AAF’s messaging through the website, email, and social channels. To further spread the reach of AAF to the student population at Iowa State University, Brett recruited a student assistant at ISU to facilitate conversations with students about AAF events and news. This past year, Brett has served as the Education Director. He coordinated this year’s wildly popular student event which also gave further reach to the Cultivate Iowa public service effort and implemented a successful mentorship program for students at Drake University, Iowa State University, Simpson College and the University of Iowa. Currently, Brett is working to extend the reach of the mentor program by partnering with other organizations to give students wider exposure to professionals in diverse areas of discipline.

Brett is a partner at Slash Web Studios in Ankeny and is an advocate for adopting new technology because he believes strongly that no technology should be without a loving family.

Rookie of the Year

Rookie of the Year is awarded to a member that has been with the club for less than two years and has gone above and beyond in his/her efforts to advance the club.

Lydia Metzger, Two Rivers Marketing

Lydia Metzger became involved with AAF of Des Moines in 2011 while a student in the advertising management program at Drake. She continued her involvement as a student by attending events and participating in the mentor program. She became a professional member in 2013, jumping directly into a position on the board as the Communications Director. Her previous experience in communication’s roles for other organizations and her involvement in AAF as a student prepared her to take on the role. She works to keep members updated through communications via the website, emails and social media channels.

Lydia currently works at Two Rivers Marketing as an account executive assisting with day-to-day client and account management on national business-to-business accounts.

Annually a corporate sponsor provides a case study outlining the history of its product and current advertising situation. The case study reflects a real world situation to challenge students' critical thinking abilities and creativity.
